Were You Exposed?
Were you exposed to a possible rabid animal? (bite, scratch, or saliva)
Yes:
1. If you were exposed and have been bitten or scratched enough to break the skin and cause bleeding consult your doctor or the emergency room right away. 2. If you are able, capture the animal and put it in a cool place but do not handle it otherwise. 3. Contact animal control or local rabies handler to send the animal off for testing. 4. Do not wait for signs of infection. Symptoms in humans can take weeks to appear. |
No
1. Nothing needs to be done. |
If you've seen an animal acting strangely, but have not come into contact with it, call animal control or local rabies handler for extraction and testing.
1. Trap the animal as soon as possible but do not treat or handle it on your own. Keep in a cool place.
The emergency room is the best place to go for post exposure.
